Heading to Cornwall This New Year? Pack Your Own First Aid Kit!
Heading to Cornwall for New Year’s celebrations? Don’t rely on local health services — they’re under severe strain. The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust is begging visitors to bring their own first aid supplies amid “extreme pressure” on the NHS.
The trust urges people to carry painkillers, flu and cold remedies, rehydration powders, and all prescription medications. They’ve even shared a handy checklist featuring essentials like bandages, antiseptic, tweezers, scissors, and medical tape.
“Are you going to #Cornwall this #NewYear? Bring these three self-care kings with you just in case! Pain relievers, flu and cold remedies, and rehydration powders are all available. Don’t forget your prescription meds.” — RCHT We Care (@RCHTWeCare)
South West Ambulance Service Declares Critical Incident
The crisis isn’t just in Cornwall. After Christmas, the South Western Ambulance Service — covering the region — also declared a critical incident due to “extreme pressures.”
On Wednesday alone, there were 482 patients waiting for ambulances and 106 stuck waiting for hospital handovers. Ambulance crews are stretched thin, with delays piling up across the system.
Emergency Departments Buckling Under Unprecedented Pressure
Adrian Harris, Chief Medical Officer at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, warns the public: “Emergency departments are under incredible pressure. Please think very carefully before visiting A&E. Use 111 online or by phone, visit pharmacies, or see your GP if you can.”
He added, “We are extremely busy, so only come if it’s absolutely necessary. If you’re unsure, contact us first. We’re open, but swamped.”
Pressure Mounts Across Multiple NHS Trusts
- Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust has also declared a critical incident thanks to record A&E attendances, 111 and 999 calls, GP visits, and ongoing staff sickness.
- Patient discharge delays and reductions in ambulance crew availability are worsening the crisis.
- North East Ambulance Service declared a critical incident on 27 December, citing “unprecedented pressure” and serious delays.
This New Year, NHS bosses urge everyone to self-care where possible and only seek emergency help when absolutely necessary. Pack your first aid kit — and prepare for delays if you need medical attention!
