UK Braces for Weekend Thunderstorms as Warm Air Rolls In
The UK is set for a major weather shake-up this weekend. Warm, humid air from the southeast is expected to spark thunderstorms from Saturday night through Sunday. Expect a wild ride!
Saturday: Sunshine Then Showers
After a chilly start, most of the UK will enjoy dry, sunny spells on Saturday. But things won’t stay bright for long. Cloud cover will thicken over southern England later in the day, bringing a chance of quick showers.
Storms Hit on Sunday
Sunday will see a more dramatic change. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will develop overnight Saturday into Sunday, especially over southern England. By Sunday morning, the risk of heavy, organised downpours and fierce thunderstorms will rise significantly.
Yellow Thunderstorm Warning in Place
The Met Office has issued a Yellow severe weather warning for thunderstorms covering much of England and eastern Wales. While many areas may escape the worst, heavy rain could fall fast – between 30 to 40mm in under an hour, with some spots seeing 75mm or more.
This intense rainfall could cause sussex/natural-flood-management-project-in-ringmer-to-address-local-flood-risk-continues-to-take-shape/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">localized flooding and serious disruption.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Harris says: “Through Saturday night and into Sunday, we’ll see a gradual shift with an increasing chance of heavy thundery showers, particularly across central UK. These could bring intense rainfall, gusty winds, lightning, and hail. Not everywhere will see storms, and confidence for exact locations is low right now.”
“The thunderstorm risk will move northwards through Sunday afternoon and early evening. Anyone with plans should stay updated with the latest Met Office forecasts and warnings.”
Looking Ahead: Unsettled Start to the Week
High pressure will push eastwards by Sunday, setting the stage for more unsettled weather next week. Expect spells of rain, showers, and cloudier skies after recent bright days.
Residents are urged to keep an eye on weather updates and prepare for potential disruption this weekend as thunderstorms sweep across the UK.
