Essex High Sheriff Awards Volunteer Leader for Outstanding Community Service

High Sheriff Honors Cadet Unit Leader JoJo Mitchell

Essex High Sheriff Nick Alston handed PCSO JoJo Mitchell a special certificate for her “great and valuable services to the community” at the latest Thurrock Volunteer Police Cadets (VPC) passing out parade.

The award reads: “The award also recognises the appreciation of the residents and people of the said High Sheriff’s County for activity and contribution in enhancing the life of the community.”

Strong Support During Sheriff’s Term

Nick Alston praised the 1 Volunteer Police Cadet Unit for their strong support throughout his year as High Sheriff, including assisting at the 1 High Sheriff’s Awards ceremony last year.

He visited the unit alongside Assistant Chief Constable Andy Mariner to inspect the cadets and presented the award, saying:

“I was delighted to present a High Sheriff’s personal award to PCSO JoJo Mitchell. I have great respect for the volunteer leaders of the VPC scheme and I commend them all. I am particularly grateful to the Thurrock unit, led by JoJo, which has supported me enthusiastically during my year as High Sheriff.”

JoJo Mitchell: A Dedicated Leader

JoJo, a Police Community Support Officer with Thurrock Community Policing Team, has volunteered as unit leader since 2017. She currently helps guide 24 cadets aged 13 to 17, with a new intake planned for September.

On receiving the accolade, JoJo said she was “pleased, surprised and extremely humbled.” She emphasised the team effort in developing the cadets’ skills, confidence, and self-awareness:

“I’m very grateful that the work our inspirational young people in Thurrock VPC Unit and the leadership team dedicate their time has been recognised. And I am thankful for the continued support of the High Sheriff and of my bosses in the force for the Cadets and the VPC scheme itself.”

Supporting Local Police and Community Safety

The Thurrock Volunteer Police Cadets back police officers by taking part in community engagement projects and local operations. Their activities include speed checks and “Challenge 25” purchases, where cadets help prevent the sale of age-restricted goods to under-18s.
