Young Rugby Player Dies on Pitch in Tragic Cambridgeshire Clash
A rugby player in his 20s has tragically died during a club match in Cambridgeshire, leaving the local community in shock. The heartbreaking incident unfolded on a Saturday afternoon during an Eastern Counties First Division game between Wisbech and Diss.
Heartbreaking Tackle Ends in Fatality
During a tackle, the young player collapsed on the pitch. Despite immediate medical aid from two qualified Diss players and rapid response from emergency services, he could not be saved. The game was quickly abandoned, and Wisbech Rugby Club suspended all activities out of respect.
Community and Rugby World Rally in Support
“The club is deeply saddened by the events of yesterday,” said David Dobson, Wisbech 1 Club secretary. “We are grateful for the support of the local and wider rugby community, and for the expertise of the emergency services who came to help.”
Roger Pierson of the Eastern Counties Rugby Union confirmed the tackle was a “rugby incident” with no head contact involved. The Rugby Football Union (RFU) and Injured Players’ Foundation have stepped in to provide support to both clubs and players affected.
Paramedics’ Efforts Could Not Save Player
The East of England Ambulance Service scrambled two ambulances, an ambulance officer, and an air ambulance after reports of the collapse. Paramedics performed CPR and used a defibrillator, but the player tragically passed away on the pitch.
“Sadly, despite the efforts of paramedics, the patient could not be resuscitated. Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this tragic time,” an ambulance service spokesperson said.
