A team from McGill University and Mexican research bodies has unveiled two crocodile species previously mistaken for the common American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus).
Found on Cozumel Island and Banco Chinchorro Atoll, these crocs are genetically and physically distinct, making them entirely new species.
Lead researcher José Avila-Cervantes admitted: “This discovery completely shocked us. It’s the first deep dive into the genetic and morphological diversity in these isolated populations.”

These yet-to-be-named species harbour fewer than 1,000 breeding adults each. Despite hiding on remote islands, rapid coastal development threatens their survival.
