£50m Boost to Revolutionise UK Medical Research

The government is injecting a massive £50 million into medical research charities to spark a wave of groundbreaking research across the UK. This cash splash targets diseases like cancer, dementia, and motor neurone disease, aiming to fast-track treatments and save lives.

Funding to Support 1,200+ Early Career Researchers

  • £50m awarded to 90 medical research charities nationwide
  • More than 1,200 early career researchers to benefit, securing the future of UK medical science
  • Backing government’s push to support the NHS, slash waiting lists, and deliver better treatments

Science Minister George Freeman revealed the funding on Sunday, highlighting how it will empower charities across the country. Notable beneficiaries include Epilepsy Research UK, North West Cancer Research, Medical Research Scotland, Wellbeing of 1, and Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI.

Government Ministers Praise Investment as Vital for UK Innovation

George Freeman, Science Minister, said: “Medical research charities—from giants like Cancer Research UK to smaller specialists such as Cure Leukemia and the MND Association—are the jewels in the crown of UK medical innovation.”

“Charity fundraising took a nosedive during the pandemic, so this £50m government boost is vital to support over 1,000 early career researchers and keep UK medical breakthroughs coming.”

Will Quince, Minister of State for Health, added: “We’re cementing the UK’s lead in life sciences by backing the next generation of pioneering researchers.”

“This investment accelerates cutting-edge medical advances for conditions like dementia, improving diagnoses and patient care.”

Securing the Future of UK Medical Science

Launched in 2021, the Medical Research Charities Early Career Researchers Support Fund helps recruit and retain top talent in medical research. It was created to counter the fundraising crisis triggered by COVID-19.

These early career researchers are the lifeblood of life sciences, working to combat hundreds of diseases with new therapies and innovations that could transform public health.

The fund is managed by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), supported by the Association of Medical Research Charities. It combines £45 million from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology with £5 million from the Department for Health and Social Care.

This strategic investment ties into the government’s wider science and technology agenda unveiled in March, which aims to boost public R&D spending and cement the UK’s place as a global science and technology superpower.
