East Cowes Fire Station Shuts Abruptly Over Safety Fears
The East Cowes community on the Isle of Wight is reeling after the sudden closure of its local fire station on York Avenue. Councillor Karl Love revealed the station is set to shut immediately due to serious safety concerns with the building’s condition.
Short Notice Sparks Outrage
Councillor Love slammed the rushed decision and short notice given to evacuate fire appliances and equipment by Thursday. He said, “This decision is abrupt and the notice insufficient. The building’s safety is paramount, but the potential loss of a vital emergency service hub, with no immediate alternative in place, is unacceptable.”
Love also warned the permanent loss of the fire station could put the whole community at risk.
Critical Location With No Backup
East Cowes Fire Station is a key player protecting the Red Funnel ferry terminal, shipyards, energy depot, and the historic Osborne estate. It also doubles as a base for retained firefighters and was used as a COVID-19 vaccination hub, proving its vital local role.
Fire & Rescue Service Under Pressure
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRA), which runs the station, has yet to officially comment on the closure. The service recently hiked its council tax portion by 2.99% for 2024-25, despite facing a looming £4 million budget gap next year.
HIWFRA promised a temporary fix to cover the service gap but stressed no long-term decisions on the station’s future had been made yet. Islanders will continue to be protected by Newport and nearby fire stations.
Official Explains Building Woes
Glenn Bowyer, HIWFRA’s director of operations, explained:
“The building has suffered from subsidence. Although underpinning stopped the movement, the leftover damage left it in an unmaintainable state. Recent assessments forced us to decide that crews cannot safely operate from the station.”
The community now demands clarity on how fire services will remain effective without this critical hub. Councillor Love and local leaders are pushing for urgent solutions to keep East Cowes safe amid this sudden crisis.
