West Midlands Ambulance Service Leads the Way in Apprenticeships!

National Apprenticeship Week Shines Spotlight on Success

Running from 6-12 February, National Apprenticeship Week celebrates the incredible work of apprentices and employers nationwide. This year, West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) is stealing the show.

Ambulance Trust Breaks New Ground

WMAS is one of the first ambulance trusts to be approved as a Main Training Provider by the Education and Skills Funding Agency for Higher Level Apprenticeships. It’s the most productive organisation in the West Midlands and the ambulance sector, boasting the largest number of student paramedic registered apprentices.

More Than a Decade of Apprenticeship Excellence

The Trust kicked off its apprenticeship programmes in 2010 with the Motor Vehicle Apprenticeship — still going strong today. Now, apprenticeships range from Level 2 up to Level 7, covering a broad spectrum of roles.

Success Stories in Patient Transport and Beyond

  • Since launching the Non-Emergency Patient Transport Scheme in 2012, WMAS has recruited 289 apprentices.
  • Currently, 15 apprentices are active on the programme.
  • Many have secured permanent roles within the Trust.
  • Alumni include 24 paramedics, 20 technicians, and seven advancing student paramedics.
  • Four apprentices now help train new staff, while 40 work across Patient Transport and other departments.

“Apprenticeships are central to assisting the Trust to build our future workforce. I would like to thank everyone involved in supporting our apprenticeship schemes and assisting with the development of our staff,” said People Director Carla Beechey.
