Police Chief Sounds Alarm on UK Policing Crisis Ahead of New Home Secretary
Hampshire Police Federation Chairman John Apter has delivered a stark warning over the state of UK policing as Amber Rudd steps down as Home Secretary.
Police Under Siege: Cuts and Chaos
“With years of brutal budget cuts and relentless anti-police rhetoric from Downing Street, policing is on its knees,” Apter said. Officer numbers have plunged to levels not seen since the 1970s. The police need a lifeline – fast.
New Home Secretary Faces a Crime Time Bomb
Crime is spiralling. Knife crime is out of control. London’s murder rate is at an all-time high. “Anyone stepping into this role must grasp just how bad things have become,” Apter said.
Little Hope for Change Under Tory Rule
But Apter fears the worst. “No matter who the next Home Secretary is, I expect business as usual. With a Prime Minister who’s openly hostile to the police pulling the strings, the destruction of British policing will carry on unabated.”
“I accept this may be a cynical view but from experience it’s a realistic one. I genuinely hope for the sake of my colleagues who tirelessly protect the public, I’m wrong – but I doubt it.”
