Woman Arrested After Blaze Rips Through Southampton Tower Flat
Police have nabbed a 28-year-old woman on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after a fire tore through a flat in Redbridge Towers, Southampton.
Fire Engulfs 12th Floor Flat
The blaze ripped through a 12th-floor apartment on Cuckmere Lane Sunday evening, leaving residents shaken. Firefighters battled the flames for three hours in the 19-storey building. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported, though some neighbours were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
One local told us the inferno may have sparked from a candle left burning in the kitchen around 5.30pm.
Tenants Left Out in the Cold
Temporary accommodation has been offered to those impacted by the smoke and fire damage. The arrested woman, believed to be the tenant, is being questioned at Southampton Police Station as detectives and specialist arson officers continue their probe.
Meanwhile, Southampton Independents Councillor Andrew Pope slammed local council officers for poor communication during the crisis:
“I have personally thanked the Police and Hampshire Fire and Rescue for their excellent response ensuring no serious injuries occurred. But I was concerned tenants and residents were left in the dark. On a cold night, no facilities were offered despite requests. Some residents and children were clearly traumatised.”
Councillor Pope has launched his own investigation into the council’s handling of the incident and demanded an urgent update.
Fire Service and Police Keep Investigation Burning
Hampshire Fire and Rescue confirmed no one suffered serious harm. Police and fire crews remained at the scene into Monday, working with the arson task force to uncover what caused the fire.
