Tragedy struck North Devon on Friday evening as a man lost his life and several others were hospitalized following a medical incident believed to be linked to a potent batch of heroin.
Devon & Cornwall Police, alongside partners across the northern part of the county, were alerted to the situation at approximately 5 pm on Friday. Reports indicated the circulation of an unusually strong batch of heroin in the area, prompting emergency services to declare a major incident due to the imminent threat it posed to the local drug-using community. The major incident was subsequently stood down on Saturday morning, April 27.
By midnight on Saturday, a total of eight individuals had been treated in hospitals across North Devon, spanning three locations in Westward Ho!, Bideford, and Barnstaple. These individuals were believed to have ingested the heroin, resulting in their hospitalization.
Tragically, despite medical intervention at the scene, a ninth person—a man—succumbed to the effects of the substance and passed away.
Following thorough police investigations, two men and two women have been apprehended on suspicion of involvement in the supply of the controlled substance. They are currently in police custody pending further inquiries.
Supt. Toby Davies, commander of the North and West Devon local policing area, emphasized the swift response of authorities in addressing the situation and issuing warnings to the affected community. He urged caution among substance users and assured the public that the situation is believed to be under control. However, he reiterated the importance of seeking immediate medical assistance if anyone suspects they or someone they know may be in danger or experiencing a medical emergency.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with drug use and underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and health partners to safeguard public health and safety.
