More than Half of Brits Plan to Re-Gift This Christmas
A shocking new survey by online fragrance giant Perfumedirect.com reveals that 57% of Brits are gearing up to re-gift presents this festive season. That’s a massive 35.5% jump compared to last year!
Why Re-Gifting Is Going Mainstream
- Saving Cash: 58% said cutting spending is their top reason.
- Cutting Waste: 12% want to be greener and socially responsible.
- It’s a Habit: 6% always stash away gifts to pass on later.
Surprisingly, only a third re-gift because they actually disliked the present. Others pass it on because they already have it (9%), don’t need it (23%), or want to make the most of nice gifts (27%). A sneaky 7% re-gift knowing the original giver won’t find out.
What Happens to Unwanted Gifts?
Half of Brits (51%) donate unwanted Christmas pressies to charity. Meanwhile, 19% sell them, 15% toss them in the bin, and 10% stash them away in the loft.
Re-Gifting Is No Longer Taboo
The survey of 1,899 UK adults shows times are changing. Over half (55%) say re-gifting is now more socially acceptable than ever. Only 33% stick by the old “never re-gift” rule. Nearly half (48%) wouldn’t mind receiving a re-gift—so long as it’s thoughtful.
On average, households plan to give away three re-gifted items this Christmas. One in three have actively set gifts aside in the past year to re-gift.
Women Lead the Re-Gift Revolution
Women are the kings and queens of re-gifting. A huge 78% of re-gifters identify as female, compared to just 19% of men.
Most Regifted Items You Should Watch Out For
- Bath sets: The number one re-gifted item.
- Body lotions: A close second.
- Fragrances: Classic scents make perfect gifts.
- Alcohol: Champagne and boxed booze are popular choices.
- Chocolates: Frequently passed along.
The least re-gifted? Clothing, including the dreaded Christmas socks.
And beware: 1 in 10 Brits admit to the ultimate faux pas—giving back a gift to the very person who gave it to them!
Expert Tips on Re-Gifting with Style
Jonny Webber from PerfumeDirect.com weighs in: “Re-gifting is now a savvy way to save money and cut waste. What was once taboo is now widely accepted, especially with the rise of pre-loved fashion and gifts.”
“Re-gifting isn’t about giving used items, it’s about being smart. Buying bargains during sales, stashing quality gifts away, and giving them to the right person makes perfect sense. Fragrances work well since they’re classic and don’t spoil quickly.”
Jonny adds, “Just keep track of who gifted you what to avoid awkward mix-ups. And steer clear of re-gifting within the same social circle—no one likes hurt feelings during Christmas!”
