A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a string of suspected arson attacks on properties linked to Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Kentish Town.
Police Nab Suspect Early Tuesday Morning
Officers detained the suspect in the early hours of Tuesday, 13 May, on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in police custody as the investigation intensifies.
Three Fires Under Scrutiny, Including Two Near Starmer
Emergency services responded to fires at the entrances of two residential homes in north London within 24 hours – one shortly after 1.30am on Monday, and another on Sunday. Both properties have ties to the Prime Minister.
The Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command has taken the lead, given the high-profile nature of the case. Detectives are also probing a third incident: a vehicle fire in NW5 on Thursday, 8 May, to see if there is any connection.
Met Police Confirm Details of the Arrest and Investigation
“A man has been arrested in connection with a series of arson attacks. The 21-year-old was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday, 13 May, on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in custody,” a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said.
The arrest covers three separate incidents. On Monday, 12 May at 1.35am, police were alerted by the London Fire Brigade to a fire at a NW5 home. Officers found damage at the property’s entrance but no injuries were reported.
Due to the Prime Minister’s connection, the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command is spearheading the investigation. All three fires – including the vehicle blaze on 8 May and another property fire in N7 on 11 May – are being treated as suspicious. Enquiries are ongoing.
