Nursery worker jailed for 14 years over baby’s shocking death

Blow to justice as 9-month-old dies after being strapped face down

A nursery worker has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for causing the death of nine-month-old Genevieve Meehan. Kate Roughley, 37, strapped baby Genevieve face down to a bean bag for over 90 minutes, suffocating the infant in a horrific childcare blunder.

Callous care and cold-hearted cruelty exposed

Roughley, with 17 years’ childcare experience, showed no emotion as the verdict was read out at Manchester Crown Court. During the trial, she was shown to have little sympathy for children, referring to Genevieve as a “vile whinger” and “diva.” CCTV footage revealed she ignored the baby’s desperate cries and frantic movements as she struggled to breathe.

Tragic details of the fatal incident

  • Genevieve, known as “Gigi,” was the beloved daughter of barrister John Meehan and solicitor Katie Wheeler.
  • On the day of the tragedy, she was left at Tiny Toes Nursery in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport.
  • Roughley tightly swaddled her, strapped her down, and covered her with a blanket.
  • The baby was found unresponsive over an hour and a half later and was pronounced dead at hospital.

Trial uncovers horrific neglect and attempted cover-up

The prosecution slammed the nursery environment as “very unsafe,” directly causing Genevieve’s asphyxiation. Roughley tried to cover her tracks, claiming she frequently checked on the babies, but CCTV footage demolished her story.

Mrs Justice Ellenbogen said: “By your callous act, you have deprived Genevieve of the future she should have had.”

Despite the tragedy, the judge ruled a life sentence wasn’t appropriate, as Roughley was not deemed a continuing threat to the public.

Heartbreaking impact on family and siblings

Genevieve’s family has been left devastated. Her six-year-old sister tearfully shared, “Every day, I get punched with sadness. What this lady has done is terrible and something nobody should experience.”

Outside court, her parents blasted Roughley’s “callousness” and remembered Genevieve as a joyous child who loved playing the tambourine and spending time with her big sister.

Police and prosecutors condemn the crime

Detective Inspector Charlotte Whalley called Roughley’s crime “abhorrent” and praised the family’s strength. Karen Tonge, a CPS specialist, stressed the severe impact of the tragedy on Genevieve’s grieving family.

The 14-year sentence brings tough justice but can never undo the heartbreaking loss suffered by Genevieve’s loved ones.
