Tragic Brixton Academy Crush Claims Two Lives
Gaby Hutchinson, 23, and Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, have died following a deadly crush at Brixton Academy on December 15th. Fans surged to get into a gig by Afrobeat artist Asake, causing chaos and tragedy. A third victim remains in critical condition.
Gaby’s Partner Demands Justice
Gaby’s partner, Phoebie Turley, spoke out with heartbreak and anger. “Gaby did not deserve this,” she said. Gaby, who used “they/them” pronouns, was working as a security dog handler when the tragedy struck. They passed away on December 19th, while Rebecca, a mother of two, died two days earlier.
“Justice must be served, and someone must be held accountable for what occurred. Not just for Gaby, but also for Rebecca,” Turley said.
“The whole mess started because people turned up with no tickets or tried to kick through a door. What for? What was the point? You have now killed innocent people.”
“Gaby wasn’t there for the concert. They didn’t go looking for trouble. They were there to do their job and keep people safe.”
“The only comfort I have is knowing they saved some people that night.”
Remembering Gaby and Rebecca
Both from Gravesend, Kent, Gaby and Rebecca were known as kind-hearted souls. Turley described Gaby as “someone who would give you the shirt off their back.”
“Gaby would literally do anything for anyone at the drop of a hat. They took care of everything for me from the moment we met,” Turley recalled.
The Heartbreak and Aftermath
Turley noticed something was wrong when Gaby stopped replying to texts. “The last thing they said was, ‘I’ll wake you up when I’m home.’ But I had a bad feeling.”
It was only after a call from Gaby’s manager that Turley rushed to St Thomas’s Hospital, where the full horror became clear.
To help with funeral costs, Turley and a family member have launched two crowdfunding pages that have already raised over £5,000.
