Copnor Man Jailed for Brutal Attacks on Police and Drug Crimes

Jesse Madgwick’s Violent Spree

Jesse Madgwick, from Lyndhurst Road, Copnor, was sentenced on Thursday 19 November at Portsmouth Crown Court. His run-ins with the law span from drug offences to violent assaults on emergency workers.

Drugs and Cash Discovered During Police Searches

On 27 July 2018, Madgwick was stopped and searched in Southsea for unrelated reasons. Officers found drug paraphernalia and a substantial amount of cash. Just two months later, on 30 September, police caught him again on Market Way, Portsmouth, carrying piles of cash, a large stash of class A drugs, and several phones – clear signs of drug dealing.

Assaulting Police Officers: Metal Bar, Bites, and Kicks

Madgwick’s violence escalated. On 24 November 2019, while officers responded to a domestic incident in Copnor, he attacked them. One officer was struck with a metal bar and bitten on the hand, suffering minor injuries. The other officer suffered swelling and redness to her face.

On 8 February 2020, Madgwick pushed an officer to the ground while police detained a man at another domestic scene. After being arrested, he kicked an officer in the stomach – all within the same night. Neither officer was seriously hurt.

Guilty Pleas and Police Zero Tolerance

Madgwick pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including:

  • Three counts of assault by beating an emergency worker
  • One count of obstruction/resisting a constable
  • Two counts of involvement in supplying Class A drugs
  • One count of making an offer to supply Class A drugs
  • One count of supplying a Class B drug
  • Two counts of possessing criminal property

Detective Constable Graham Skull slammed Madgwick’s actions: “We take a zero tolerance approach to assaults on our officers, and do not accept that it is simply part of the job. No emergency worker should turn up to a call expecting to come to harm. We will keep working with the CPS to bring those responsible to justice.”
