Birthday Bash Turns Brutal: Man Jailed for Nose-Biting Attack
Shane Groves, from Hazel Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, has been slapped with a two-year, one-month prison sentence at Nottingham Crown Court. The 2019 incident began as a birthday night out but quickly spiralled into a savage assault.
Homophobic Abuse Sparks Violence
On 5 April 2019, Groves was celebrating his birthday at a club on Alexandra Terrace, Sutton, when he launched into homophobic verbal abuse against another man. When challenged, Groves lost it – hurling a chair at his victim.
Things worsened as a second man stepped in to calm Groves, only to be spat at. More club-goers tried to intervene, momentarily breaking up the scuffle.
Groves Bites Off Victim’s Nose in Shocking Attack
After a brief separation, Groves suddenly charged the victim at the bar and headbutted him. Amid the chaos, Groves bit the victim’s nose so hard he tore the tip clean off, leaving it lying on the club floor.
The victim was rushed to Queen’s Medical Centre, but despite treatment, he lost the tip of his nose and now faces cosmetic surgery to repair the damage.
Police Condemn Brutal, Hate-Fuelled Assault
“Groves’ actions left a man with life-changing injuries and caused him great psychological distress purely for standing up to him and trying to calmly put a stop to his homophobic behaviour,” said Police Constable Scott Kerr, who led the investigation.
“This was a victimless prosecution relying heavily on CCTV, photos, medical reports, and witness statements. It was a nasty, unprovoked attack which Nottinghamshire won’t tolerate. I’m glad Groves is now behind bars for his crimes.”
