Knife-Wielding Taxi Robber Gets Nine Years Behind Bars

William Hugh Smith, 37, who has no fixed address, has been locked up for nine years for a terrifying taxi robbery in Kensington Walk. The crime happened just after 1am on June 1, 2019, when a taxi driver arrived on Corby Street to pick up a woman called “Lucy”.

Fake Girlfriend Ruse Ends in Armed Robbery

Smith and 38-year-old Shaun Alexander, already serving six years and nine months for the same robbery, jumped into the cab pretending to be “Lucy’s” boyfriends. Moments later, one pulled a handgun, demanding cash and the driver’s wallet. They then fled into the night.

Victim Still Haunted by Nightmares

The driver revealed the ordeal left him fearing for his life. “I honestly felt like I was going to be killed,” he said. The trauma has lingered, causing sleepless nights and nightmares. “I have woken on a few nights screaming and having a nightmare and I have never had this before,” he added.

Police Praise Investigation and Tough Sentencing

Alexander was convicted in November 2019, but the hunt continued for his accomplice Smith, who was only recently caught and sentenced at Northampton Crown Court.

“I am really pleased with the fact Smith has been handed nine years in prison for his part in this very serious crime,” said Detective Inspector Dave Harley. “They both belong behind bars.”

“This case shows our commitment to justice, no matter how long it takes. The victim’s courage has been outstanding.”

“There were several robberies in Corby that summer which rattled the community. These convictions send a strong message that violent criminals will be caught.”

“Special credit goes to DC Lee Norton for his relentless work on this case.”
