Brutal Murder Shocker: Ipswich Man Jailed for Life Over Fatal Attack
Warren Atkinson, of Norwich Road, Ipswich, was locked up for life today at Ipswich Crown Court. He must serve at least 15 years after being found guilty of murdering 37-year-old Steven Povey last summer.
Gruesome Attack in Shared Home
The horrific killing happened on July 9, 2021, at the property both men lived in. Paramedics arrived just before 5pm after an emergency call reporting a seriously injured man inside. They found Mr Povey unconscious in a kitchenette upstairs, with major facial wounds and a large wooden table weighing on him. Despite desperate attempts, he was pronounced dead at 5.35pm.
Stark Evidence of Savage Assault
- Post-mortem revealed 62 separate injuries all over Mr Povey’s head and body.
- Blunt force trauma, brain bruising, a possible brain bleed, and a fractured larynx suggested a vicious attack — not an accident.
- Witnesses saw Atkinson exit the kitchenette covered in blood.
- Forensic analysis showed Steven’s blood splattered on Atkinson’s clothes.
- The blood patterns and injuries pointed to a violent struggle, shattering Atkinson’s claim that Steven simply kept falling over drunk.
Atkinson’s Lies Unravelled
At first, Atkinson denied attacking Steven, saying he only tried to help him after repeated falls. He later admitted to assault but insisted it was self-defence. The jury didn’t buy it, unanimously convicting him of murder.
“Steven Povey was the victim of a sustained and brutal assault. Put simply, he was beaten to death,”
— Detective Chief Inspector Tam Burgess
DCI Burgess slammed Atkinson’s “clear lack of remorse” and hailed the verdict as justice for Steven’s family, who endured the trauma of a second trial after the first collapsed.
“The forensic and medical evidence confirmed this was far beyond any reasonable self-defence,” he added. “We hope this sentence delivers some closure to Steven’s loved ones.”
