Son Jailed for 11 Years After Brutal Attack on Dad in Worksop
Vicious Assault Leaves Father Hospitalised for Two Months
James Sweeney, 40, from HMP Nottingham, has been handed an extended 11-year prison sentence at Nottingham Crown Court. The Worksop man was found guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent after launching a savage attack on his 68-year-old father at their Northwood home on May 25, 2019.
Sweeney’s violent rampage left his dad hospitalised for over 60 days at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, suffering multiple injuries.
Father’s Heroic Account Overrules Son’s Lies
When paramedics arrived, Sweeney tried to cover up the assault, claiming his dad had “chucked himself on the floor.” But the victim quickly told paramedics and police that Sweeney had “given him a good kicking,” blaming his son for the brutal beating.
Anger over Drugs Sparks Brutal Attack
Sources believe the attack stemmed from Sweeney’s anger over drug issues involving his father. The horrific incident has left the victim seriously unwell and now living in a nursing home.
Police Praise Evidence-Led Investigation
Detective Sergeant Matthew Grant of Nottinghamshire Police said: “Sweeney launched a vicious and sustained attack on his own father, inflicting multiple injuries which led to him being hospitalised for over 60 days at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.”
“The victim was unable to provide formal evidence due to serious health decline and remains seriously unwell in a nursing home.”
“Sweeney is clearly a dangerous individual with a propensity for violence and I’m pleased that our detailed evidence-led investigation has led to him being removed from our streets.”
