Shocking Death of Toddler Lilly Hanrahan After Horrific Abuse
Toddler Lilly Hanrahan died two days after being found collapsed with six broken ribs in Northfield, Birmingham. Her mother’s then-partner, Sean Sadler, claimed she had simply fallen asleep and would not wake up.
40 Injuries Found on Little Girl’s Body
Experts discovered 40 recent injuries on Lilly’s tiny body, including three broken vertebrae and lung bleeding from weeks earlier. The prosecution told Birmingham Crown Court the injuries were likely caused by being violently shaken and thrown against furniture like a sofa armrest.
Sadler, 31, denied murder and wounding with intent, but a jury believed the evidence against him. He had been caring for Lilly after her guardian—appointed because Lilly’s mother couldn’t care for her—left her in his care.
Warning Signs Missed Before Tragedy
Lilly’s guardian had noticed bruising and alerted her nursery to keep an eye on the little girl. A serious case review into Lilly’s death is due to be published in June.
The West Midlands Police described the multiple injuries as consistent with harsh gripping or slapping. Sadler, of Coriander Close, Rubery, is set to be sentenced this Friday.
Emotional Toll on Family and Investigators
Detective Constable Jo Buchanan, the family liaison officer, called the case “very difficult.” Prosecutor Hannah Sidaway described Lilly as a “happy and bubbly little girl” before the abuse.
“The case was extremely complex, involving numerous medical experts to confirm the injuries and rule out accidental causes,” Sidaway added.
