Barber Busted with £300K of Cocaine in Suitcases at Heathrow
A Bournemouth barber has been locked up after trying to smuggle a whopping £300,000 worth of cocaine into the UK from Brazil. Jhonatan Martins Kirchhoff, 22, was caught red-handed at Heathrow Airport with drugs hidden in his suitcases.
From Haircuts to Drug Mule: Pandemic Pushes Barber into Crime
Kirchhoff, who holds both German and Brazilian citizenship, admitted turning to drug smuggling to pay off his own drug debts after Covid-19 shut down his work. Caught on 1 July returning from Sao Paulo, Border Force officers found cocaine cleverly concealed in two of his bags.
Initially, the barber denied any knowledge, claiming he’d picked up the luggage from Primark. But he later confessed to the National Crime Agency (NCA) that he’d been handed the cases in Brazil and expected about $7,000 for each. Once cut and sold on UK streets, the drugs were worth over £300,000.
Five Years Behind Bars for Drug Smuggling Barber
Kirchhoff pleaded guilty at Isleworth Crown Court and was sentenced to five years and four months in prison. Senior Investigating Officer Andy Noyes warned: “Organised crime networks use people like Kirchhoff as mules. His ties to Brazil made him an easy target. This conviction sends a clear message—drug trafficking isn’t worth risking your future.”
Border Force and NCA Team Up to Tackle Drug Crime
Minister for Immigration Compliance and the Courts, Chris Philp, praised the Border Force’s efforts: “Fantastic work by Border Force officers stopped these drugs reaching UK streets and helped bring a smuggler to justice. Illegal drugs fuel crime and violence, so our partnership with the NCA is vital.”
