Gun and Baseball Bat Threat Leaves Pensioner £200 Worse Off
Jon Wood, 35, from Westfield Avenue, was yesterday slammed with jail time at Sheffield Crown Court. Originally facing trial for firearm possession and carrying an offensive weapon, Wood flipped his plea to guilty mid-trial.
Shocking Attack on Vulnerable Pensioner
The chilling incident unfolded on 21 June last year in Monk Bretton. Wood visited the home of a vulnerable man in his 70s. With permission, he took the victim’s bank card and electricity card, claiming he would top up the electricity at a shop.
Later the same day, Wood stormed back wielding an imitation firearm and a baseball bat-style weapon.
£200 Stolen Under Threat of Violence
Wood threatened the pensioner with the fake gun and forced him to transfer £200 to Wood’s account before fleeing the scene.
Sentence Delivered: Jail Time and Restraining Order
Wood was handed 16 months for possession of the imitation firearm, with an additional six months for carrying the offensive weapon to run concurrently. A five-year restraining order bans him from contacting the victim or going near his home.
“This was a nasty incident where Wood preyed on a vulnerable pensioner for his own gains,” said Detective Constable Jade Smith-Sykes, who led the investigation.
“We hope seeing Wood sentenced and the restraining order put in place will help the victim move on from what must have been a terrifying ordeal.”
