UK Airports Reimpose 100ml Liquid Limit at Six Regional Hubs

The Department for Transport (DfT) has slammed the brakes on liquid allowances at six UK regional airports. From midnight Sunday, passengers flying from these airports must once again stick to the dreaded 100ml liquid limit.

Why The U-Turn?

These airports had ditched the old 100ml liquid restriction thanks to Next Generation Security Checkpoints (NGSC). These high-tech CT scanners, which create 3D images of bags, made carrying more than 100ml of liquids a thing of the past—until now.

The 100ml rule was slammed in after a terrifying 2006 terror plot involving liquid bombs on flights from London to the US. While major hubs like Heathrow, Gatwick, and Manchester still enforce the rule because they don’t yet have NGSC scanners, these six airports had been pioneering the change.

Passengers Warned to Check Before Flying

A Department for Transport spokesperson said this temporary rollback is to help fine-tune the new security systems. “This will impact only a small number of travellers,” they added.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper stressed the restriction affects just 6% of UK air passengers — those flying from the six regional airports listed. He urged travellers to check security rules with their airports before jetting off.

The government vowed these measures keep UK aviation security top-notch and promised updates on when the ban will be lifted once more improvements are in place.
