Care Worker Stole £200k from Vulnerable Patients – Jailed for 27 Months

Chelsea Whittaker, 31, of Accrington, was slammed with a 27-month prison sentence today at Preston Crown Court. The former care service manager admitted ripping off around 30 vulnerable people out of at least £200,000 between 2015 and 2018.

Trusted Manager Abuses Position at Care Homes

Whittaker worked for Lifeways, a care company running homes across Lancashire for people with mental and physical disabilities. Her job included managing residents’ finances and cashing their cheques. But instead of helping, she repeatedly withdrew money from their accounts—keeping some or all for herself.

Victims Left Struggling for Essentials

  • One victim’s mother revealed her son was left unable to buy basic toiletries, forced to scrimp just to afford shaving foam.
  • Another had barely any money left to pay for vital rehabilitation after a heart attack and sadly died in hospital after refusing further treatment.
  • A third victim’s sister broke down in court, saying, “I am so angry and devastated. She stole from him while he was at his most vulnerable.”

Police Condemn ‘Betrayal’ of the Vulnerable

Detective Constable Stephen Dixon slammed Whittaker’s “shocking” betrayal. He said she exploited her trusted role not just with her clients but by cashing cheques for others’ clients too, often pocketing money herself.

“We will not stand for this in Lancashire,” Dixon said. “I hope this sentence brings some closure to the victims’ families.”

Lifeways Repays Victims, Promises Tighter Safeguards

A Lifeways spokesperson confirmed they discovered the thefts and alerted police. They have now repaid all stolen funds and vow to enforce stricter checks to protect those in their care.

“We deeply regret the distress caused and are committed to preventing future incidents,” the spokesperson added.
