‘Burner’ Phone Tossed Into River as Drug Dealer Fails Escape Bid in Maidstone
Leandro Da Silva ditched his ‘burner’ phone while fleeing police in Maidstone. The 19-year-old was caught after being spotted acting suspiciously near St Peter’s Street on 4 February 2020.
Chased by Plain-Clothed Officers, Phone Flung Into Water
Da Silva, joined by a woman, headed to his car in a nearby car park. When officers identified themselves for a search, Da Silva bolted and hurled his phone into the river. Despite the stunt, he was soon caught and £650 was found on him.
Drugs Stash Revealed in Vehicle Search
Police raided the car, uncovering 17 wraps of heroin and 23 wraps of crack cocaine. Although the phone sank, detectives traced Da Silva’s drug dealing through texts sent to Maidstone users. The supply line went cold once the phone disappeared.
Jailed for 2 Years 4 Months: Police Send Strong Warning
Da Silva, of Kennet Walk, Reading, pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court to supplying crack cocaine and heroin. On 14 October, he was sentenced to two years and four months in a young offenders’ institution.
“Da Silva sought to avoid a conviction by running from officers and disposing of his phone in the river. However, a thorough and painstaking investigation has shown him to be a prolific dealer, preying on some of the most vulnerable in our communities,” said DCI Matt Talboys.
“Our message remains clear: travel into Kent to supply drugs and we will track you down and ensure you are swiftly brought to justice.”
