Parents Jailed Over Daughter’s Horrific Injuries

Benjamin O’Shea, 26, and Naomi Johnson, 24, from Southwark, London, have been locked up after their baby daughter, Amina-Faye, suffered devastating abuse. The couple were found guilty of causing or allowing their daughter to endure severe physical harm.

41 Rib Fractures and 24 Broken Bones

Amina-Faye had 41 fractured ribs and 24 broken bones in her limbs. Doctors told police the injuries were “highly indicative” of ongoing abuse. Despite the damage, no clear cause of death was confirmed. The little girl died after the couple called 999 when she stopped breathing in April 2019.

Paramedics arrived quickly and tried to save Amina-Faye, but she died at the scene. Initially, the death was thought to be sudden and unexplained because no visible injuries were found. However, later X-rays revealed the horrifying extent of her fractures – some fresh, others healing – pointing to repeated abuse.

Denial and Blame Game

O’Shea, a former army reservist, and Johnson blamed Amina’s death on a visit to the GP and suggested medical staff caused her bone breaks. But medical experts proved the fractures happened on multiple occasions and could not have been accidental. Evidence also showed healed bleeding inside the baby’s head, indicating past trauma.

Police uncovered texts where the pair admitted to mistreating another child they were responsible for. O’Shea had also made several calls to NHS 111 over his own mental health concerns and ignored medical advice to take Amina to hospital just weeks before her death.

Jail Sentences and Rising Child Abuse Concerns

  • O’Shea was sentenced to eight years and eight months behind bars.
  • Johnson was handed seven years and two months.

Judge Nigel Peters QC called it “yet another harrowing case of parents being cruel to their children.” Their sentencing comes amid a worrying rise in child cruelty cases across England and Wales. From July 2020 to June 2021, there was a 23% increase in reported child cruelty, with over 27,300 cases recorded. Deaths or serious harm linked to abuse also rose by 19% during the same period.
