Darlington Man Jailed for Brutal Unprovoked Stabbing
Brian Hamilton, 53, from Darlington’s Bolton Close, made a desperate dash from the scene after stabbing a man multiple times in a shocking, unprovoked attack on September 29, 2020.
Victim Seriously Injured in Brutal Knife Assault
The 32-year-old victim was slashed in the head, neck, and upper back shortly after meeting Hamilton. Despite the savage attack, he managed to flag down an off-duty police officer on Crowhurst Road, who quickly called for emergency aid.
The victim was rushed to hospital with life-changing injuries.
Fleeing Felon Caught After Nationwide Hunt
Despite being on conditional bail in Darlington for another ongoing investigation, Hamilton fled the area to evade arrest. Police launched a nationwide search, leading to his August 2021 arrest in Paddington with the help of the Metropolitan Police.
Seven Years Behind Bars for Hamilton
Charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing a bladed weapon, Hamilton denied the allegations. But a jury found him guilty at Lewes Crown Court, where he was sentenced to seven years in prison on July 1.
“This was an unprovoked attack on a man Hamilton barely knew, leaving him with serious injuries the effects of which he is still living with today,” said Detective Sergeant Stephanie Bell.
“This sentence should serve as a reminder that there is no safe haven for criminals, and we will pursue you and bring you to justice with our partners in forces across the country.”
