Met Police Hero PC Andrew Cushing Wins Top Bravery Award
PC Andrew Cushing has been crowned the London region winner at the National Police Federation Bravery Awards. The Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection officer earned the top honour after bravely disarming a gun-wielding suspect during a dramatic chase in Camden.
Daring Chase Ends in Gun Threat
On the morning of February 4, 2022, PC Cushing spotted a vehicle driving erratically near Regent’s Park. He tried to stop the driver, but they sped off recklessly, forcing the officer to give chase on his motorbike. When the suspect began driving on the wrong side of the road, endangering others, PC Cushing wisely called off the pursuit.
Moments later, the car crashed and was abandoned. The driver bolted on foot in Mornington Crescent. PC Cushing gave chase and tried to make an arrest — when suddenly the suspect pulled a gun and aimed it straight at him.
Calm Under Fire: A True Act of Bravery
Alone and facing an armed man, PC Cushing kept his cool. In a split second, he wrestled the gun away and subdued the suspect. His quick thinking kept both himself and the public safe.
Met Commissioner and Colleagues Praise PC Cushing
“This shocking incident began as a routine vehicle stop and highlights the unpredictable nature of policing,” said Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley. “I congratulate PC Cushing and the other Met officers nominated for their professionalism and bravery.”
Commander Simon Messinger added, “PC Cushing acted with utmost calm and clarity, seizing a split-second chance to disarm the man so he could be arrested and the public kept safe.”
PC Cushing, preparing to retire soon, said, “It’s a proud moment in my career. Every officer deserves recognition for the tough work they do, never knowing what danger lies around the corner.”
His bravery is a stark reminder of the courage police officers show every day to keep London safe.
