Detective Hits Back at TV Myths: Real Police Work Is Tougher and More Rewarding

Detective Constable Stacey Hardstaff is setting the record straight on life as a real-life investigator. Forget the TV dramas – the job’s a lot tougher, but every bit as exciting and satisfying.

More Than Desk Duty: Real Detectives Are People-People

Working in the Adults-Public Protection (PP) unit at Nottinghamshire Police, Det Con Hardstaff’s days are packed with meeting people, building trust, and supporting some of society’s most vulnerable.

“On television, detectives spend most of their time at their desks or interviewing suspects but that’s not how it really is,” she says. “It is such a challenging and rewarding job and all about dealing with people. We are helping some of the most vulnerable people in society and keeping them safe.”

She added, “To be able to tell a victim that an offender has been charged and remanded and seeing their reaction is such a great feeling.”

From PCSO to Detective: A Career Full of Challenges

Stacey’s journey took her from PCSO to response officer, then to the Sexual Exploitation Investigation Unit, and now Adults-PP. She loves how her current role lets her follow cases through to the end.

“I was determined to do something dynamic and challenging,” she said. “It can be really hard, but there is huge job satisfaction.

She recently pulled a grueling 20-hour shift after a high-risk domestic incident, robbery, and assaults case landed in custody.

“It was all hands on deck. I spent six hours seeking a charge. People don’t realise the work behind securing a charge and the number of agencies involved. On TV, it happens with one phone call but in reality, it’s far more complex.”

A Privileged Role Helping Vulnerable Victims

Det Con Hardstaff says helping vulnerable victims who genuinely want support makes her job deeply rewarding.

“In Public Protection, victims come to us for help, which is different from a lot of CID work. It makes the job hugely satisfying and a real privilege.”

She believes detectives should rotate through departments to sharpen their skills and broaden their expertise.

For Stacey, the thrill isn’t the Hollywood-style glitz – it’s the real-life impact on people’s lives.
