Drunk Driver James Reade Jailed for Dangerous 93mph Smash

James Glenn Reade, 47, from Wimborne, was locked up for six months at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday 11 December 2020. He admitted to dangerous and drink driving. On top of that, he’s banned from the roads for two and a half years.

Speeding at 93mph in a 30mph Zone

The madness unfolded on the morning of Sunday 17 November 2019. At 7.20am, Reade set off from Bournemouth in his Volkswagen Scirocco, captured on his own dashcam driving with a misted-up windscreen. He hit up a drive-thru McDonald’s in Poole but then tore back towards Bournemouth.

His speed shot up to a terrifying 93mph on Alder Road, where the limit was just 30mph. Unable to slow for a roundabout, he smashed into a traffic island before ploughing into a house on Ashley Road.

Homeowner Watches Horror Crash, Reade Flees Scene

The crash left structural damage to the property, with the occupant inside at the time witnessing the terrifying impact. Reade fled but was tracked down shortly after at another Bournemouth address.

Police found he reeked of booze. His breath test failed and after a hospital check, a blood test at 11.11am — over two hours after the crash — showed 86mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80mg.

“James Reade’s driving on Sunday 17 November last year was extremely reckless and it is fortunate that nobody was seriously hurt by his actions,” said PC Dave Cotterill of the traffic unit.

“This case highlights the dangers of driving the morning after drinking. Even if you think the booze has worn off, your judgement and reactions remain impaired.”
