Death Crash Driver Jailed for Killing Pregnant Carer
Niklaus Warner, 29, has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. The crash claimed the life of Meghan Pollentine, 22, who was five months pregnant at the time.
Fatal Crash on Early Morning Drive
The tragic smash happened just after 5am on June 4, 2020. Warner was driving Meghan and a colleague home from their night shift as mental health carers in Havant, Hampshire. After more than an hour on the road, Warner’s silver Ford KA swerved into the path of a white Ford Transit van.
Meghan died instantly at the scene. The van driver suffered severe, life-changing injuries and was hospitalised for a month.
Dashcam Footage Reveals Dangerous Driving
Police viewed dashcam footage from a vehicle behind Warner’s car. It showed Warner’s car repeatedly crossing the central white line with no attempt to brake before the crash. Warner told officers he couldn’t remember the journey or why he drifted into oncoming traffic.
Investigating officer PC Doug Park said: “This tragic incident could have been avoided had Warner taken appropriate breaks. He had many chances to stop and rest but chose not to. That choice cost a much-loved young woman her life.”
Family’s Heartbreaking Tribute
“We lost our dear Meg in this tragic accident. She was a happy, passionate soul with an infectious laugh. Our lives will never be the same without her. We still ask, why didn’t Warner stop to rest? Why didn’t he let Meg drive home? We hope he reflects on the pain he’s caused and understands we will never see Meghan or meet her baby.”
