Taxi Driver Jailed for Horrific Abuse of Disabled Women
Derek Bilby, 64, abused the trust of two disabled women after picking them up in his taxi. He built a relationship with his victims before grooming them and carrying out vile assaults over two years.
Horrific Crimes Uncovered
Both women, who have significant disabilities, bravely told their carers what had happened. Bilby was arrested and faced a tough investigation. In May 2022, he was charged with multiple offences. On 12 October 2022, he admitted to one count of rape, two counts of sexual assault, assault by penetration, and indecent exposure.
“Both of these women have significant, long-term vulnerabilities and are practically housebound. Bilby took advantage of this, coercing his way inside their homes before forcing himself on them on multiple occasions,” said investigating officer Alex Storey.
“It’s sickening to know that both women felt they could trust him, and he was quick to take advantage of this.”
Brave Victims Helped Bring Rapist to Justice
The inquiry began in January 2020 after the first incident was reported. Detectives used speech experts to ensure the victims’ voices were clearly heard during video interviews. Forensic evidence sealed the case, with Bilby’s DNA found on one victim and on the other’s clothing.
“I can’t praise both of these women enough. This was a truly harrowing experience and they have shown exceptional bravery in working with us throughout the investigation,” IO Storey added.
“We can’t rule out that Bilby targeted other women when he worked as a taxi driver in Doncaster. Anyone with concerns should come forward.”
18-Year Sentence and Lifetime Sex Offender Registration
Bilby, formerly of Alexander Street in Bentley, was sentenced to 18 years behind bars at Sheffield Crown Court on 18 April. He has also been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
