Taxi Driver Jailed for Preying on Disabled Women

Derek Bilby, 64, exploited vulnerable women he met through his taxi work. Both victims had significant disabilities. He built trust by picking them up and visiting their homes, then groomed them for two years before committing horrific abuses.

Disturbing Crimes Uncovered After Victims Speak Out

Both women bravely told their carers about Bilby’s sickening acts. He was arrested and charged with multiple offences in May 2022. On 12 October 2022, Bilby pleaded guilty to one count of rape, two counts of sexual assault, assault by penetration, and indecent exposure.

“Both of these women have significant, long-term vulnerabilities and are practically housebound. Bilby took advantage of this, coercing his way inside their homes before forcing himself on them on multiple occasions,” said investigating officer Alex Storey.

“It’s sickening to know that both women felt they could trust him, and he was quick to take advantage of this.”

Lengthy Investigation and Forensic Proof

The probe began in January 2020 after the first incident was reported. Detectives used expert help to record interviews with the women. Forensic evidence found Bilby’s DNA on one victim and on the other’s clothing, sealing the case.

“I can’t praise these women enough. Their bravery throughout this harrowing ordeal has been exceptional,” added Storey.

Warning to Potential Other Victims

Bilby, formerly from Bentley, Doncaster, was sentenced to 18 years at Sheffield Crown Court on 18 April. He was also handed a lifetime place on the Sex Offenders’ Register.

IO Storey warned: “We cannot rule out Bilby victimising other women during his years as a taxi driver in Doncaster. Anyone with concerns should come forward.”
