Ex-Cop Caught Messing About with Woman’s Theft Claim
Former PC Shiva Hetheecharan has been slammed for unprofessional conduct after a damning hearing on Friday, 13 May. The ex-officer, once part of the South West Command Unit, faced serious allegations over honesty, integrity, respect, confidentiality, and conduct.
Police Officer Abused Trust, Court Hears
Between October 2018 and May 2020, Hetheecharan obtained the phone number of a woman who had reported a theft. Rather than sticking to the job, he repeatedly contacted her, even daring to ask her out for a drink. On 15 June 2019, he sent a message inviting her for a drink, making a clear attempt to start an inappropriate relationship.
When the woman didn’t respond, he cheekily followed up, claiming her silence was a “no.” Then, in May 2020, he lied about her case being “reopened” and tried to visit her home to take a statement — a blatant fabrication.
Chief Superintendent Slams Behavior
“We expect exemplary standards from our people and we know that when officers take advantage of their position of trust, the mutual respect between police and the public is eroded,” said Chief Superintendent Lis Chapple, policing Kingston, Wandsworth, and Merton.
“People come to us at their most vulnerable moments expecting us to help and protect them. There is no room in the organisation for those who do not take this responsibility seriously and it is right that had PC Hetheecharan not already left then he would have been dismissed without notice.”
Investigation Leads to Ban from Policing
After the woman reported the officer to 101, the Independent Office for Police Conduct launched an investigation. The panel concluded that, had Hetheecharan not already quit, dismissal from the Met would have been inevitable.
He’s now blacklisted by the College of Policing’s barred list, meaning he can’t work for any police forces, police bodies, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, or Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary ever again. Justice served.
