Violent thug William Reader makes daring court escape before being locked up for three-and-a-half years
Court chaos as Reader goes on the run
William Reader caused mayhem at Medway Magistrates’ Court on February 12, 2022, after assaulting court staff during a remand hearing. After refusing bail, the 26-year-old suddenly pushed over a detention officer and grabbed keys to the security doors. He then fled the building, sparking a two-day police manhunt.
Twisted rampage of violence and terror
Reader was originally arrested on February 10, facing numerous charges linked to months of relentless violence from December 2021 to January 2022. His terror campaign included smashing windows with bricks, slashing car tyres, and threatening to kill a woman and her family. He also punched two female victims and a witness who stepped in to stop him.
Justice served at Maidstone Crown Court
Eventually caught in Stockton-on-Tees, Reader appeared at Maidstone Crown Court on July 26. He pleaded guilty to stalking with fear of violence, evading lawful custody, three counts of criminal damage, three assaults, and assaulting an emergency worker. The former Nursey Grove resident from Gravesend was sentenced to three years and six months behind bars, alongside restraining orders protecting two women.
Victims speak out
“Reader subjected his victims to repeated and sustained abuse and threats,” said PC Daryl Johnson of the Proactive Vulnerability Team, leading the investigation. “He harassed me relentlessly with countless calls and texts. His vile actions caused immense distress and fear, leaving a terrifying impact that lingers. Thankfully, justice has caught up with him, and I hope this sentence brings peace to those affected by his dreadful behaviour.”
