Tragic End for Archie Battersbee: Court Confirms 12-Year-Old Brain-Dead
Archie Found Unconscious at Home
Archie Battersbee, just 12 years old, was found unconscious at his Southend, Essex home on April 7. Since that day, he has remained unresponsive, sparking a heartbreaking legal battle over his care.
Doctors Declare Brain Stem Death
Medical staff at the Royal London Hospital in east London informed the court that Archie was “highly likely” brain stem dead. They urged the court to allow withdrawal of his life support. MRI scans from May 31 confirmed the devastating diagnosis of irreversible brain stem function cessation.
Parents Fight Against Life Support Withdrawal
Archie’s parents, Hollie Dance and Paul Battersbee, fiercely opposed the doctors’ move to end life support. The court heard Archie suffered brain damage following a domestic incident, which his mother suspected was linked to a dangerous online challenge. Despite efforts, Archie never regained consciousness.
Judge Gives Final Permission to End Life Support
Mrs Justice Arbuthnot ruled that Archie died at noon on May 31. She gave the green light for the Royal London Hospital medical team to stop mechanical ventilation. “I find that irreversible cessation of brain stem function has been conclusively established,” she stated in her written decision.
