Monster Rapist Caught After Terrifying Attack Near Fareham Station

John Sommerville Taylor Horne, 39, has been charged with rape and assault occasioning actual bodily harm following a brutal attack on a woman on a footbridge over Western Way, close to Fareham train station.

Victim Threatened and Attacked After Night Out

The woman told police she left the Slug and Lettuce pub around 1am and was walking down West Street when an unknown man approached her. He threatened her before launching a vicious assault and raping her on the footbridge.

Operation Amberstone Leads Police to Horne

Hampshire Constabulary’s specialised Operation Amberstone team launched an intensive investigation. Their hard work paid off when they identified Horne as the culprit after extensive enquiries.

Horne Admits Guilt, Faces Sentencing

Horne, of Broadacre Place, Fareham, admitted to rape and assault during his appearance at Portsmouth Crown Court on Monday, 25 April. He has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced on 25 May.

Detective Chief Inspector Roger Wood said: “This was a shocking incident which will forever have an impact on this woman’s life. Her courage and support throughout this investigation has ensured the conviction of a very dangerous man.

“This crime also had a huge impact on the local community who were understandably concerned about what had happened. I hope the conviction that has been secured provides some reassurance to residents that we will do everything in our power to investigate these types of incidents thoroughly and bring those responsible to justice.”
