Chaos erupted in Aycliffe Village on Saturday night when police responding to a welfare check were violently attacked.
Officer Dragged, Kneed, and Thrown Down Stairs
Just after 9.30pm, officers arrived following concerns for a man’s welfare. But things took a sinister turn when an unrelated man launched a savage attack. He allegedly dragged one officer to the floor, kneed him in the head, and then hurled him down a flight of stairs.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
Police quickly arrested a 48-year-old man at the scene. He now faces charges of affray and assault. The suspect was remanded in custody and is set to appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court today.
Police Insist Attack Was Isolated
“Attacks on police officers are completely unacceptable – nobody deserves to be assaulted while doing their job,” said Inspector Sarah Honeyman from Newton Aycliffe Neighbourhood Police Team. “This was an isolated incident and did not involve members of the public. The officer was taken to hospital and is now recovering at home.”
