Bogdan Ungureanu, 41, nailed for robbery and fraud after attack in Barnet park

Bogdan Ungureanu, 41, homeless and of no fixed address, was found guilty of robbery and fraud at Kingston Crown Court on Friday, 5 May. He was cleared of rape charges.

Attack in Watling Park

On 28 August 2021, members of the public rushed to help a woman shouting in Watling Park, Barnet. The victim told police she was assaulted by an unknown man while sitting in the park. She was left unconscious with bruises, cuts, and a black eye.

The attacker also stole her handbag and purse. He later used the stolen cards to buy alcohol, tobacco, and lottery tickets.

Police hunt using CCTV clues

  • Officers found victim’s clothes and a black baseball cap at the scene.
  • CCTV showed a man wearing the cap walking toward the park and leaving without it shortly after.
  • The man carried a shopping bag with a black tassel matching the stolen purse’s description.
  • Police circulated images of their suspect across systems and media.
  • A PCSO recognised the man as Bogdan Ungureanu on 16 September 2021.

He was arrested in Stratford. Forensic tests linked him to the victim via evidence on her tights.

Victim’s bravery praised

“She has shown tremendous courage in supporting our investigation and giving evidence in this trial. It is thanks to her that this man has been convicted. We hope that this case will encourage others who have been victim to serious sexual offences to come forward and speak to us.”

The victim received ongoing support, including special measures allowing her cross-examination to be video-recorded, sparing her from attending court.

Bogdan Ungureanu will face sentencing on all charges soon.
