Burn Victim Dies 19 Years After Attack: Assaulter Convicted of Murder

Steven Craig, 59, has been found guilty of murdering Jacqueline Kirk — nearly two decades after severely injuring her in a savage assault in Weston-super-Mare.

Brutal Attack Left Jacqueline Fighting For Life

Back in 1998, Jacqueline suffered horrific burns covering 35% of her body after the assault. She spent nine gruelling months in hospital, including three months in intensive care. Doctors initially doubted she would survive.

Jacqueline defied the odds and lived for another 21 years before passing away aged 61 in August 2019.

New Evidence Links Attack to Death

A post-mortem revealed she died from a ruptured diaphragm caused in part by burn injuries sustained in the attack. After a three-week trial at Bristol Crown Court, the jury accepted prosecutors’ arguments that Craig’s vicious assault directly contributed to her death.

Craig, from York, was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on 9 November.

Family Praise Medical Staff, Remember Jacqueline’s Strength

“If it wasn’t for [the medics], we wouldn’t have had the extra 21 years and we’re very, very grateful for all the hard work they did,” said Jacqueline’s daughter, Sonna.

“Most people would describe her as stubborn… but for her, it was a positive thing — it kept her going.”

Sonna revealed how her mother faced cruel stares and avoidance from strangers but found joy and regained confidence through her love of photography, nature, and her dog.

Detective Calls for Justice Served

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Almond said: “Jacqueline Kirk sustained unimaginable physical and mental injuries at the hands of Steven Craig.”

“While she saw many family milestones, her life was still cut short by these injuries. It was right Craig was held fully accountable.”

“I hope this verdict brings some closure to Jacqueline’s family after such a long ordeal.”
