Robber Caught Red-Handed and Jailed for Over Three Years
Gary McKibbin, 36, from Edmeston Close, E9, was sentenced to three years and two months at Wood Green Crown Court on Tuesday, 14 March. He pled guilty to robbery just a week earlier on 7 March.
Violent Jewellery Robbery Foiled by Brave Locals
The shocking crime happened on Saturday, 11 February, in Kyverdale Road, N16. Police were called after a member of the public spotted a man being held by several others. Officers found McKibbin detained by two courageous passersby while onlookers stood nearby.
Witnesses revealed that McKibbin and an accomplice targeted a lone woman, ripping off her earrings before violently pushing her to the ground to steal more. Thanks to quick-thinking members of the community who held McKibbin until police arrived, he was arrested on the spot. His partner in crime managed to escape.
One Suspect Still on the Run
The second suspect remains at large. Described as a black man in his 30s, between 5ft 3ins and 5ft 5ins tall, he was last seen wearing a dark suit. Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
“McKibbin and another man deliberately targeted a lone woman for her jewellery, violently attacking her in the process,” said Superintendent Andy Port, Central East Neighbourhoods Team. “Fortunately, brave members of the public intervened and detained McKibbin until officers arrived. He had no choice but to plead guilty after being caught red-handed.”
“We remain committed to bringing the second man to justice. If you have any information, please contact us or Crimestoppers,” added Port.
Police Praise Community and Urge Vigilance
“It is critical that everyone feels safe on London’s streets,” said Detective Inspector Nikki Hardy of the Central East Burglary and Robbery Investigation Team. “Our officers in Hackney and Tower Hamlets work tirelessly to stop violent opportunists like McKibbin who fuel street crime.”
“I’m proud of the investigation team that brought this offender to justice so quickly and grateful to the public who stepped in that night,” Hardy added.
