Child Predator Michael Norman Smith Jailed for Six and a Half Years

Michael Norman Smith, 58, has been locked up for sexually assaulting a boy under 10 between 1997 and 2003. Smith preyed on the youngster while living in Sandown, Isle of Wight.

Groomed With Games, Trips and Treats

During the trial at Isle of Wight Crown Court, it emerged Smith lured children to his Willow Way home with promises of computer games. He also took them swimming and to the cinema, building trust before committing his crimes.

After the abuse, Smith gave the boy money, sweets, and snacks to keep him quiet.

Victim Finds Courage – Pervert Admits Guilt

It was not until 2019 that police were contacted by a man claiming Smith had abused him at the same address. Following a probe, Smith was charged with multiple counts of indecent assault and assault on a child.

Initially pleading not guilty, Smith changed his tune midway through the trial on 9 February and confessed to all offences.

Justice Served – Police Praise Victim’s Bravery

Smith was remanded and sentenced on 8 April at Portsmouth Crown Court to six and a half years behind bars.

“Smith is a danger to children. He groomed and manipulated the child for his own sick gratification,” said Detective Sergeant Katy Lee, who led the investigation.

“The boy has had to live with the nightmare into adulthood. He showed immense courage coming forward to face his abuser. Thanks to him, a predator is now behind bars where he belongs.”

Support Available for Abuse Survivors

Police urge anyone affected by sexual abuse to contact them confidentially on 101. Specialist support services are also available for those who find it hard to speak out.
