Drunk Driver Jailed for Fatal Head-On Crash That Killed 70-Year-Old Woman
Six Years for Deadly Drink-Drive Horror
Umberto Schramm, 37, from Wembley, was sentenced to six years behind bars at Kingston Crown Court yesterday (24 November). Alongside his prison term, he’s been banned from the roads for nearly seven years – a driving disqualification running concurrently with his sentence.
Deadly Crash on Farnham Road
The horror unfolded on the afternoon of Friday, 31 May 2019, when Schramm lost control of his Mitsubishi Outlander on Farnham Road, Elstead. His vehicle smashed head-on into a Ford Fiesta coming the other way. The Fiesta was driven by 70-year-old Frances Filby from Farnham. She was rushed to St George’s Hospital but tragically died the next day from her injuries.
Reckless Driver More Than Twice Over the Limit
Tests revealed Schramm was over double the legal alcohol limit and had also taken a large quantity of drugs at the time of the crash.
“Frances Filby tragically had her life cut short by the selfish and irresponsible actions of Umberto Schramm,” said Stuart Bonner from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit. “Driving under the influence can have very real and very tragic consequences. The impact of such recklessness is far-reaching and can never be underestimated.”
“Hopefully, bringing Umberto to justice helps Frances’ family begin to come to terms with their loss. Our thoughts remain with them during this difficult time.”
