Brutal Cigarette Beating Culprit Jailed for Life After Victim Dies

A man who blasted a stranger over a cigarette five years ago, leaving him brain damaged, has now been convicted of murder after his victim died from complications linked to the savage attack. Jake Tierney-Campbell, 25, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 15 years behind bars.

Unprovoked Attack Left Victim in a Vegetative State

Back in June 2015, Daniel Bodimeade, 43, was standing outside his home in Grays when a drunken 20-year-old Tierney-Campbell approached him, asking for a cigarette. Without warning, Tierney-Campbell launched a vicious assault, kicking and punching Daniel repeatedly. Witnesses saw Daniel’s head slam violently against the wall as the attack continued.

Daniel was rushed to hospital with a catastrophic brain haemorrhage. He never recovered, requiring 24-hour care in a specialist facility and living in a permanent vegetative state, fed through a tube and needing constant assistance.

Victim’s Death Spurs Murder Charge and Life Sentence

Tragically, Daniel died in February 2019 from a rare inflammation caused by his feeding tube, a complication stemming from the brain injuries inflicted during the attack. Detectives charged Tierney-Campbell with murder in December 2019.

After a two-week trial, the jury found Tierney-Campbell guilty. Chelmsford Crown Court handed down a life sentence with a minimum term of 15 years on Friday, 2 October.

Family and Police Speak Out on Harrowing Case

“This case has been truly heart-breaking for the Bodimeade family and all of us who have worked to secure justice for Daniel and his family,” said Senior Investigating Officer DCI Stephen Jennings. “Daniel’s family have really lost him twice over – first to the savage attack, then to complications four years later. There is no place for violent criminals like Tierney-Campbell in our society.”

Daniel’s parents, David and Deborah, paid moving tribute to their son, describing the devastating impact the attack had on their lives.

“The early Sunday morning call to say Dan had life-changing injuries changed everything. Seeing him in intensive care was heart-breaking. Daniel’s life was forever altered – 24-hour care, no recognition, no recovery. Since his passing, we feel something missing every day,” they said.

Daniel’s sister Rebecca added:

“He suffered horrific injuries and silently endured years of pain. The attack was inexcusable and unforgettable. No prison sentence will ever heal this emotional pain.”

His fiancée and mother of his child, Margaret Mwihaki, tearfully said:

“Dan never hugged his son again, never smiled or spoke. Our son will grow up without his daddy and without answers why. The guilt of that will stay with me forever.”
