Man Dragged Victim Under Car for Nine Metres in Shocking Hit-and-Run

Manslaughter Conviction After Brutal Attack

A 63-year-old man has been convicted of manslaughter after he deliberately rammed a man with his car and dragged him under the vehicle for nine metres. Uran Nabiev, from Erith, was found guilty at the Old Bailey on 22 June. He was also convicted of causing actual bodily harm to a second man and will be sentenced on 23 June.

Deadly Row Over Damaged Car Mirror

The tragedy unfolded in the early hours of 19 October 2019 after 26-year-old Jake Kemp and a friend left a pub on Bexley Road, having been drinking. Later, Jake’s friend smashed the wing mirror of Nabiev’s parked Toyota Prius—a drunken mistake admitted to police.

Unbeknownst to the pair, Nabiev witnessed the damage from his home. Furious, he got into his car and chased them down the road. Nabiev drove onto the pavement and struck Jake’s friend, who was thrown onto the bonnet and then fell, suffering a dislocated shoulder.

Horrific Hit-and-Run on Pavement

Jake ran to the opposite side of the road, but Nabiev was not done. The driver did a U-turn, sped at Jake on the pavement, and when Jake stumbled, Nabiev ran him over, dragging him beneath the car for nine metres before fleeing the scene.

Emergency services responded swiftly, but Jake was unconscious with critical brain injuries. He died three days later in hospital.

Fled the Country, But Was Caught

Following the attack, Nabiev fled to Azerbaijan, catching a flight just five hours after the incident. CCTV and police work traced the crime back to him, leading to his arrest when he returned to the UK in November 2019.

Police found Nabiev’s Toyota Prius missing key parts like the driver’s side mirror and windscreen wiper. The vehicle’s brakes and steering were all functional, confirming the attack was deliberate.

“Jake had done nothing wrong that night, he just happened to be with a friend who did a stupid act. It seems incredible that a young man should lose his life, and his family left devastated, over such a trivial matter,” said Detective Inspector Jason Fitzpatrick. “Nabiev will now face the consequences of that night’s terrible actions. I hope this result gives Jake’s family some closure.”

“We would give anything to have Jake back. He will continue to live in our hearts and in many other lives,” Jake’s family said. “Please respect our privacy during this difficult time as we grieve.”
