Teen Jailed After Cops Find Daesh Manuals Hidden Under Mattress
Detectives unearthed extremist Daesh propaganda on a mobile phone hidden beneath a mattress at 20-year-old Nuh Raheel’s Birmingham flat. The pre-planned police raid took place in October 2020.
Raheel appeared at Leicester Crown Court on Friday and was slammed with a three-and-a-half-year stretch in a youth offenders’ institution, plus a year on extended licence.
Chilling Terror Files Uncovered
The court heard Raheel admitted five charges of collecting info likely useful to terrorists. The judge branded the materials “chilling” and “dangerous,” praising the police for their thorough work.
“Raheel sought out and saved manuals that encouraged terrorist acts, and fuelled his extremist mindset,” said Commander Richard Smith of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command.
“This propaganda is produced to promote terrorist aims and is extremely harmful.”
“We urge anyone who finds extremist content online to report it to the police.”
How Raheel Was Caught
- August 2020: Met Counter Terrorism flagged a digital account stuffed with extremist Islamist literature.
- Further checks linked the account to Raheel.
- October 13, 2020: Police raided Raheel’s Birmingham home and arrested him.
- Mobile phone hidden under mattress contained weapons manuals, instructions on killing, making explosives, and evading the police.
Timeline of Charges and Trial
- October 18, 2020: Charged with seven counts of gathering terrorist materials.
- October 19, 2020: First court appearance at Westminster Magistrates Court.
- July 30, 2021: Pleaded guilty to five charges at Birmingham Crown Court.
- April 19, 2022: Found not guilty of other related terror charges after trial at Leicester Crown Court.
Raheel’s conviction sends a strong message: police are cracking down hard on anyone dabbling in extremist propaganda. The fight against terror is relentless, and officers say they’ll keep hunting for those stockpiling deadly manuals online.
