Man Who Killed Father in Nelson Locked Up for Life with Hospital Order
A 33-year-old man who stabbed and battered his father to death in their Nelson home has been handed an indefinite hospital order alongside a life sentence. Joe Walker faces at least 12 years behind bars if ever released from hospital, due to the serious risk he poses to the public.
Fatal Attack Following Mental Health Struggles and Drug Use
The tragedy unfolded on May 22 last year, when police arrived at the Fir Street property to find 65-year-old Thomas Walker dead in the living room. He had suffered multiple stab wounds and severe head injuries, the result of a “sustained and forceful multi-mode assault,” said a Home Office pathologist.
Before the attack, Joe Walker had become obsessed with coronavirus conspiracy theories online, which sparked heated arguments with his father. Thomas had sought advice about Joe’s worsening behaviour and was visibly worried at work.
Joe had been using cocaine and cannabis despite knowing how badly those drugs affected his mental health. After the killing, he tried to cover up the scene by placing a knife in his father’s hand and cleaning with bleach.
Judge: Dangerous Offender Must Serve Minimum of 12 Years
Judge Simon Medland QC said Joe Walker must serve a minimum of 12 years if released from hospital, before the Parole Board considers his case. The sentence protects the public from a man deemed dangerously unstable.
Police Praise Support and Professionalism Through Tragedy
“This is a truly tragic case which has seen a man lose his life and a family torn apart,” said DCI Lee Wilson. “Joe Walker is clearly not a well man and I hope he now gets the treatment he so clearly needs.”
“I’m relieved the public is protected by a life sentence should he ever be released. I also want to praise my colleagues for their professionalism in dealing with a horrific scene and for building the case alongside the CPS.”
