Mumtaz Ahmed, 44, has been locked up for life at Preston Crown Court for the savage killing of his elderly mother, Inayat Begum, 85. The tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of April 24, 2022, at their Prairie Crescent home in Burnley.
Gruesome Scene Discovered in Burnley Home
Police were called at around 3.30am after the Ambulance Service reported a woman found with serious head injuries. Officers arrived to find Inayat Begum dead at the scene, suffering from fatal wounds to her head, chest, and abdomen. A Home Office post-mortem confirmed she was attacked with a weapon.
Ahmed Arrested After Suspicious Behaviour
Mumtaz Ahmed was present when police arrived and was arrested after inconsistencies in his story raised suspicion. Despite pleading not guilty, a court trial found him guilty. He was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 22 years behind bars.
Detective Condemns Son’s ‘Cruel and Wicked’ Crime
Detective Chief Inspector Rachel Higson of Lancashire Police said: “Mumtaz Ahmed is a violent, aggressive man who preyed on his elderly mother.
“His cruel and wicked actions robbed relatives of a much-loved family member. Mrs Begum was described as a thoughtful, caring member of the community who had nothing but kindness for others.
“Ahmed has attempted to conceal his despicable actions through a web of lies, showing no remorse for his brutal actions resulting in the murder of his mother.
“My thoughts remain with Mrs Begum’s loved ones at this time. It is hoped that this verdict will bring some closure and enable the family to grieve in peace.
“We welcome Ahmed’s imprisonment, which will give him considerable time to reflect on the gravity of his actions.”
