Jordan Monaghan’s Life Sentence Hiked After Chilling Child Murders
Jordan Monaghan, 30, has had his life sentence extended after being found guilty of murdering two young children and attempting to kill a third. Initially handed a 40-year minimum term, the Court of Appeal has now increased it to 48 years following a review ordered by the Attorney General.
Cold-Blooded Killings of Two Young Children
During a 10-week trial, Monaghan was convicted of smothering his three-week-old daughter Ruby in January 2013 and his 21-month-old son Logan seven months later. Prosecutors revealed he killed the children to get closer to their mother after their relationship soured.
Monaghan denied guilt, claiming the children died of natural causes. The original post-mortems recorded bronchial pneumonia for Ruby and undetermined causes for Logan, so no suspicious deaths were initially declared.
Attempted Murder and Further Horrors Revealed
Monaghan’s crimes didn’t stop there. In 2016, he tried to murder a third child who survived but remains unnamed for legal reasons. This triggered a police reinvestigation, uncovering expert evidence that the first two children were deliberately suffocated.
Despite being on bail, Monaghan struck again in 2019, killing his girlfriend Evie Adams, aged 23, by poisoning her with illegally obtained prescription drugs including tramadol and diazepam. Despite court orders and police warnings, Evie and Monaghan continued their toxic relationship.
Twisted Cover-Ups and Final Justice
Monaghan tried to cover up Evie’s murder by forging a suicide note. But a detailed investigation by Lancashire’s Major Investigation Team uncovered crucial evidence, leading to his conviction on charges including murder, attempted murder, and child cruelty.
“Jordan Monaghan planned to kill his victims in secret and went to great lengths to conceal his actions,” said Det Chief Inspector Pauline Stables. “The Court of Appeal has rightly increased his sentence to reflect the truly heinous nature of his crimes. Our thoughts remain with the families of Ruby, Logan, and Evie Adams.”
